A few years ago as part of Unified Sports, the Maine Principals’ Association partnered with Special Olympics Maine to help develop and promote a Unified Basketball season in Maine. Now there are many high school and junior high teams competing each season including a newly formed one from Wells Junior High School.

So far this season, that team has played three “away” games. However, on March 19th, the team will host its first home game with Bonny Eagle at 3 pm in the Ward Gymnasium at WJHS. There is no admission fee.

“Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences, Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.” Source: The Special Olympics Maine website: www.somaine.org.

On March 7th, the Wells-Ogunquit team played Yarmouth Middle School. “I can't recall the score from this event but that was not the most important thing to have happened,” commented WJHS Bridges teacher Lauren Rivera. “Seeing students succeed and work together as a team was truly an amazing experience. We are hoping for a big turnout at the home game on March 19th.”
