On November 15th, Wells High School senior Sam LaPointe was awarded the Liberty Mutual Athlete of the Month Award for September. LaPointe received this in recognition of his performance on the Warriors Boys Soccer team in September and his overall contributions to the success of the team for the 2012 season.

Presenting LaPointe with the award was John C. Kreie of Liberty Mutual in Kennebunk and WHS Activities Director Jack Molloy.

“It’s definitely an honor considering all the hard work and dedication that I have put into all the sports I’ve played; to be recognized is definitely an honor,” said LaPointe.

The coach of boys’ soccer at WHS is Sean Bishop. “(Sam) graciously moved from natural striker position to midfield in order to bolster team defense,” noted Bishop in his nomination of LaPointe. Despite the move Bishop wrote, “(He) still managed to lead the team in scoring and helped control the middle of the field. Goal scoring against Wells dropped over 20 percent with the help of this move.”

In September, LaPointe scored 7 field goals. In the last three games of the season he scored five. LaPointe commented that the believes that the soccer program at Wells High school is not only “growing” in student participation but “definitely improving”.

He indicated that he hopes to attend Bowdoin College after high school and continue playing soccer. According to Bishop, LaPointe has “maintained a 3.8 GPA while taking advanced classes.”

The Athlete of the Month Award is part of Liberty Mutual’s Responsible Sports Program which supports local school sports volunteers and recognizes local high school athletes.
