The Wells High School Girls Field Hockey team recently raised $320 for the Breast Cancer Living Will Fund at York Hospital.

The donation to the fund was made possible from the sale of t-shirts to members of the team. Two parents of team members (who wish to remain anonymous) originally purchased the 30 pink and white t-shirts with the recognizable symbol of the search for a cure for breast cancer printed on them. Team members then had the opportunity to make an individual donation by giving $10 for a shirt with all proceeds going to the fund.

The shirts were worn by all team members on October 3rd in a home game with Traip Academy. The Wells team wore the pink t-shirts because they had designated that game day as “Breast Cancer Awareness Day”.

The donation was later ceremoniously given to representatives of York Hospital at another home game at WHS on the 16th. Present to receive the check was Dr. Amanda Demetri Lewis, D.O. and Joann Paquette who works in breast care at York Hospital. Also present was Carol Kane and Jean Kolak who fundraise for York Hospital.

“We’re surprised, completely unexpected,” said Dr. Lewis. “Very generous of these girls to think of us and to put an effort forward to get money, get donations and to put it towards this fund.” Dr. Lewis is a Breast Radiologist at York Hospital. She works with her partner, Dr. Kira Wendorf, M.D. at the York Hospital Breast Care Centers in York and Wells.

Varsity hockey team player Liz Bouchard, a senior at WHS, organized the fund drive. According to Bouchard this is the second year for “Breast Cancer Awareness Day” at a home field hockey game. Bouchard hopes this special team observance of breast cancer awareness continues after she graduates from WHS.

According to a fact sheet about the fund, “The Breast Cancer Living Will Fund provides support to those who have been diagnosed with, are undergoing treatment for, or are recovering from breast cancer at York Hospital through programs centering on the mind, body and well being.”
