WHS announces the recipients of its Athlete of the Month Awards for October

The Athletics Department at Wells High School has resumed the Athlete of the Month Award program following a hiatus of almost three years. Earlier this fall, two student-athletes were selected for the award for September 2022 in recognition of their sportsmanship and academics. And, just recently, two more Warriors, Anna Woodward, and Jackson Koh were nominated by their coaches to receive the award for October 2022.

Present when the award certificates were handed out to the students in WHS’s trophy display area were Interim Athletics Director Jodie Lawlor, WHS Volleyball Coach Rachel Graceffa, and WHS Soccer Coach Richard Terwilliger-Smith.

Anna Woodward, a senior, was recognized for her participation on the school’s volleyball team. “I was really excited when I got this award,” said Woodward who noted that two of her brothers had previously received an Athlete of the Month Award from WHS. “That’s pretty cool,” she observed.

Rachel Graceffa is Woodward’s coach and had this to say about her: “We had a tough season this year but in our last five volleyball games we went 5-O. She was a large contributor to that stretch of the season,” said Graceffa. “She is an extremely hard-working athlete. She is driven.” And in an earlier statement, Graceffa pointed out that Anna Woodward, “was a great captain for the warriors!"

Jackson Koh, a junior, was recognized for his academics and participation on the WHS Boys Varsity Soccer team. “I just think it’s awesome,” said Koe about the award and pride not only in his own efforts but that of others that led to this recognition. “It’s like an achievement to add to what you have done…”

“He has really grown as an individual and as a teammate both on and off the soccer pitch,” said Coach Richard Terwilliger-Smith about Koh at the award presentation. He is a great person to be around and I am excited that he was able to get this award,”

Although it has had a couple of changes to its sponsorship over the years, the Athlete of the Month Award program at WHS has been recognizing student-athletes for this recognition since early 2008.
