Wells High School junior Matt Sherburne was recognized in early March as WHS Student-Athlete of the Month for January of 2018. He received this award for his academics, sportsmanship, and performance on the Warriors Basketball team especially during the final games of the season and into the postseason.

Presenting a plaque to Sherburne was Wells-Ogunquit CSD Director of Athletics 6-12 Pierce Cole and Pamela Moody-Maxon of Moody Maxon Real Estate, one of the sponsors of this award.

“Matt did great on the basketball court this winter leading his team to the State Championship for the 2nd year in a row,” commented Moody-Maxon. “He was their point guard and was so aggressive on the court it made the team fun to watch. He can make things happen on the court and he is really fast and can jump!”

“It feels great,” said Sherburne in an interview following the presentation. “I am glad everyone is recognizing me. It definitely feels awesome.” He added that he will be playing basketball again next season at WHS.

"Wells played in a lot of close games this year and everyone in the gym felt pretty comfortable when the ball was in their hands,” commented John Kreie of Cole Harrison Insurance, the other sponsor of the Student-Athlete of the Month Award. "Matt became an offensive threat this past year which took some pressure off Cam Cousins. He's a fun kid to watch play the game."

According to Troy Brown, coach of the Warriors, Sherburne had a season average of 15 points scored and 3.5 steals a game. “In a win over Kennebunk at Kennebunk High School he scored 22 points, 18 rebounds, and 7 steals,” commented Brown. “His ball handling skills are second to none, especially in traffic. He was our floor leader and point guard.”
