Wells High School has selected senior Mitch Libby to receive Student-Athlete of the Month for October of 2017. He received this award for his academics and excellence in running on the school’s boys cross country team during the championship month of October. This is Libby’s second time receiving this award, the first awarded for October of 2016.

I’m excited about it,” said Libby. “I am glad that the school and other people who are in charge of this award recognize what I did in those championship meets in October and it feels good.” In November, Libby represented WHS in the 2017 New England Cross Country Championships.

According to boys cross country coach, Bob Winn, Libby “ran undefeated” for the regular season then continued to win the Western Maine Conference Division II Championship. Following this event, Libby finished 2nd in the state Class B championship. At this state meet the WHS team finished 4th in Class B and earlier won the Western Maine Conference Division II championship.

Presenting a plaque to Libby on November 20th was Wells-Ogunquit CSD Director of Athletics 6-12 Pierce Cole, John C. Kreie of Cole Harrison Insurance and Pamela Moody-Maxon of Moody Maxon Real Estate.

“We had a really successful season as a team…,” said Libby who indicated that he runs about 8 miles a day during the offseason depending on weather. He credits Coach Bob Winn for his team’s successes. “Our team would be nothing without Bob,” said Libby who has been running since the sixth grade.

According to Coach Winn, Libby qualified to compete in the New England championships “placing one of the highest spots of any XC runner from Wells High School. As a coach, I would have to say that speaks volumes and (he is) a great student on top of that! Well deserved!” commented Winn.
