In April, Wells High School senior Owen Berry was honored with Student-Athlete of the Month for January of 2017. He received this award for his academics, sportsmanship, and athleticism with a focus on his performance on the WHS Boys Varsity Basketball Team in two crucial late-season games.

Presenting Berry with a plaque on April 18th was Pam Moody-Maxon, John C. Kreie and Boys Basketball Coach Troy Brown. The Student-Athlete of the Month awards program at WHS is sponsored by WHS, the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency and Moody Maxon Real Estate.

“It means a lot,” said Berry about receiving the award. “I put in a lot of hard work in the classroom and on the court and to be recognized is pretty special.”

“Owen is one of those kids who doesn't necessarily go out there and do anything real fancy,” commented John Kreie. “What he does is give 100 percent, every second he is in the game.”

Berry, a three-year starter and team captain was credited by Coach Brown with scoring several last-minute points in two end-of-the-season games including one with rival York High School.

Berry scored “… a three-pointer to get us ahead and keep us ahead to revenge a loss earlier in the season,” said Brown about the final minute of a home game with York in January. “He also hit the biggest shot for our playoff hopes when he hit the shot with eight seconds left in a game at the Cumberland County Civic Center against Spruce Mountain. That put us into the Western Maine Championship game.” Brown also noted that Berry was named a Western Maine Conference All-Star.

The Student-Athlete of the Month Program is in its 11th year at Wells High School.
