Wells High School senior Dante Fanning has been named Liberty Mutual Athlete of the Month at WHS for October 2012. Fanning receives this award in recognition of his overall performance on the Wells Warriors Football Team which won the state championship in 2011.

In his nomination of Fanning, Coach Tim Roche commented that this player was the “leading rusher, scorer and tackler on the team” this season. Fanning, a senior, plays fullback and middle line backer positions. The Wells Warriors ended the 2012 season with 7 wins and 3 losses.

Presenting Fanning with an engraved plaque on November 15th was John C. Kreie of Liberty Mutual and WHS Activities Director Jack Molloy.

“Dante was a crucial part of yet another successful football team at Wells,” commented Kreie later in an e-mail. Kreie noted that Fanning and a number of other players ‘stepped up’ to fill a void left by the loss of 17 seniors from last years line-up. Kreie went on to note that credit for the success of this past season goes “not only to the players but the coaching staff as well.”

Fanning also plays on a co-op hockey team with Noble High School and, in the spring, participates on the WHS Outdoor Track Team.

Athlete of the Month Award is part of Liberty Mutual’s Responsible Sports Program which recognizes local high school athletes and supports local school sports volunteers. Since early 2008, numerous athletes at Wells High School have received this award for their scholarship, sportsmanship-on and off the field-and outstanding display of athletics.

Fanning has not decided which college he would like to attend after graduation but plans to continue playing football and track at the collegiate level.

At the end of his comments, Mr. Kreie observed that the recent success of the Warrior Football team has motivated younger players.
