District Seeks Substitute Teachers

The Wells-Ogunquit Community School District (WOCSD) is looking for those who wish to substitute teach.  Currently, there is a demand for more substitute teachers at all grade levels. 

Substitute teaching in the District’s respectful and creative environment can be rewarding in many ways.  One who substitutes is afforded the opportunity to make a difference in the educational lives of students.  

The experience at Wells Elementary School is typical of what can be found in each of the District’s three schools.  Kyle Burnell is the Principal of WES.

“Wells Elementary School is filled with phenomenal students and staff members,” commented Burnell. “There is a supportive community within the building and people are always willing to help guest teachers. Our substitutes do a wide variety of things throughout the school. Some serve as guest teachers in a classroom while others provide individual or small-group support to students. We have a great group of guest teachers who are in the school frequently but we are always looking for people who are interested in working with our kids,” added Burnell. 

Those who wish to apply can be selective.  Applicants can specify which grade level and subjects they wish to teach and what days they are available.   The current compensation for substitutes is $115 per school day. 

Depending on the school, a typical school day for a substitute teacher begins at 7:30 or 8:30 a.m.  Lesson plans are prepared in advance, clearly defined, and easy to follow.  Most substitute assignments are for a day or two, however, assignments can last for a longer period.
