Wells High School senior and member of the WHS Indoor Track Team Denzel Tomaszewski received a very big surprise recently when he learned that he was being featured in ‘Faces in the Crowd’, a column in the March 4th edition of Sports Illustrated magazine. This weekly column highlights exceptional high school athletes from across the United States.

“It felt really great to be in Sports Illustrated,” said Tomaszewski in an interview. “When I was selected, I was shocked. It felt great to be in that.”

Tomaszewski has been on the WHS Indoor Track & Field Team for three seasons. According to team Coach Jennifer Lewia, Tomaszewski has accomplished much in just the 2013 season alone.

“Denzel set a school, All-Time State Best Time and the Western Maine Conference League record at the Western Maine Conference Championship Meet this season running a 6.46 in the 55m Dash,” commented Lewia in an e-mail. “Denzel, for the 2nd year in a row, was voted by league coaches as the Western Maine Conference Championship’s Most Valuable Male Track Athlete.”

Lewia added that Tomaszewski went on to win the 55m dash for the 2nd year in a row in the Class B State Meet. His time was 6.53 seconds beating his previous winning time of 6.58. On March 2nd, Tomaszewski placed 4th at the New England Indoor Track & Field Championship.

At the New Balance Indoor Track & Field Championships in New York City at the Armory in March of 2012 Tomaszewski ran the 60 meter dash in 7.15 seconds. As a result he achieved Maine All-Time State Best Time in the 60m Dash. On March 8, 2013, Tomaszewski was once again at the National Championships in New York. This time he came in 9th with a time of 7.04 seconds.

Tomaszewski says that he practices running every day. A big part of his practice routine includes running the second floor hallways after school at WHS.

Last spring Tomaszewski was named Liberty Mutual Athlete of the Month for February of 2012. This award was given in recognition of his sportsmanship on and off the field, academic achievement and performance on the Wells team.

In an interview, Tomaszewski credited coach Lewia and for his significant improvements in track this season.

Denzel Tomaszewski is the son of Christine and John Tomaszewski in Wells. Although he has not yet decided which college he would like to attend after graduation in June, he is certain that he will continue his running career.
