Alyssa Loukola, a senior at Wells High School, has been selected to receive the 2017 Principal’s Award, Principal Eileen Sheehy announced recently. This award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship. Annually, one senior from each Maine high school in the MPA is selected for this recognition by their school principal.

“Alyssa leads by example in her volunteer work, her kindness to others and her commitment,” commented Principal Sheehy about Loukola. “She is most deserving of this recognition that honors achievement and citizenship.”

Assistant Principal Josh Gould added, “As a recipient of this award, Alyssa is among a select group of very talented, dedicated and motivated students from WHS. She is an outstanding example of scholarship and leadership.”

In an interview, Loukola said it was an “honor” to receive this recognition. “I was very surprised. I thought it was really awesome because I know there are a lot of people in my class that worked really hard. To be recognized for my hard work made me very happy.”

Throughout her high school career, Loukola has maintained high honor status, receiving numerous academic awards. She has distinguished herself in the classroom, the arts, and on the athletic fields.

Loukola is president of her school’s National Honor Society chapter, captain of the WHS Volleyball and Lacrosse teams and member of the WHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team. Additionally, she is involved in her school’s music programs and volunteers with various community service projects including Shootin’ For a Cure, Little Dribblers Basketball, and working with the Band Boosters at their winter and spring turkey dinners.

She is a digital artist and photographer using her expertise in photography to coordinate an independent marketing project connecting WHS with the local community. She has participated as a lobbyist for the Maine Alliance for Arts Education, networking with Maine state senators and representatives advocating for the arts in schools. In the fall, she plans to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to study photographic imaging.

On April 1st, recipients of the 2017 Maine Principal’s Award will be recognized at the MPA’s Honors Luncheon in Bangor.
