Wells High School junior Griffin Allaire has been named Student-Athlete of the Month for October of 2018. This award is in recognition of his academics and sportsmanship on the Warriors boys cross country team.

“I was surprised, nice to get,” said Allalire of the award. “Certainly an honor,” Allaire also participates on WHS’s outdoor track and field team.

Presenting him with a Student-Athlete of the Month plaque on November 15 was Wells-Ogunquit CSD Director of Athletics 6-12 Pierce Cole, Pam Moody-Maxon, and John C. Kreie. Also present was Coach Robert Winn, Allaire’s running coach.

“I think he is going to be the best that has ever come (through WHS), said Coach Winn. “He’s got another year to prove it…” The coach added, “He is going to have a lot of records before he leaves. He is talented.”

Allaire’s running in the fall of 2018 reflected Winn’s opinion. In October, Allaire finished third in the 5K (3.1 miles) event at the state meet in Belfast. “(There were) a lot of good runners there who I have been competing with for a while,” said Allaire. In November, at the New England Interscholastic X-C Championship meet, he ranked 6th among the runners there representing Maine.

Winn said that the trail was “really muddy and nasty” at the New England’s this year. He pointed out that cross country is “off road” and that trail and weather conditions can vary. “That’s the nature of cross country,” he said.

“Griffin has been a great asset to the Warrior Cross Country Team for a couple of years…,” commented John Kreie of the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency. “He comes from a very athletic family who all enjoy distance running. So it’s certainly in his blood and he’s a super good kid! I’m happy for him and his family,”

When asked how he gets psyched up to run long distances, Allaire added that he has “the drive to win”.

The Student-Athlete of the Month program is sponsored by Wells High School, the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency and Moody Maxon Real Estate.
