Updates from the Superintendent of Schools Aug 2014

The Wells High School Renovation and Building Project:

I am pleased to announce that the Wells-Ogunquit School Committee and Selection Committee met August 5th to review General Contractor and Subcontractor Bids for the construction of Wells High School. After evaluating all bids and bid alternates, it was determined that Arthur C. Dudley Contractor · Builder, Inc. of Standish, Maine will be issued a Notice to Proceed.

The contractor will work with the design team, Lavallee Brensinger Architects of Manchester, New Hampshire, to install temporary barriers for site security before the start of school. The School Committee will finalize contract requirements with the contractor and design team, and expect to enter into contract with Arthur C. Dudley Contractor · Builder in late August. A formal ground breaking ceremony will be scheduled for late September or early October.

The Wells-Ogunquit School Committee recently approved the hire of Brad Goodale for the position of Clerk of the Works. Mr. Goodale is a York County native and graduate of Wells High School. He comes to the District with fifteen plus years of experience including the following projects: York Hospital – Construction Specialist, Oyster River High School – Owner’s Representative, York High School, York Middle School, Yarmouth High School and Yarmouth Elementary School – Clerk of the Works.

In other news:

1.      The School Committee was recently briefed on the deterioration of the border fences around the district athletic fields caused by excessive and unchecked growth of the trees and vegetation along those fences. Subsequently, the District has begun a program to move the vegetation back away from the fences to avoid greater damage. We were able to make contact with a harvester to do that work at no cost to the District. Previous costs for this type of work have run into the tens of thousands of dollars for areas much smaller than what are being currently cleared on our campus. In order to ensure compliance with DEP regulations and adjacent buffering of properties, the highlighted areas that were to be maintained were provided to Town Engineer, Mike Livingston, for his review. He concurred and, in order to get as much done as we could in the limited time before school begins, gave permission to the harvester to start.

2.      Field and track work are progressing on time. The final track surface has been laid and, as of this writing, will be striped either Thursday, August 7th or Friday, August 8th. The remainder of the month will be used to put the fencing back in place, clean up the entranceways, post signage, lay protective mats, stripe and equip the fields, and, most likely in September, install bleachers.

All field surfaces have been reseeded, fertilized, core and deep-tined aerated. The irrigation system is performing as designed and the approved and agreed upon watering programs have been implemented.

3.      Warrior field bleachers will start installation Tuesday, August 12th. After the installation, the area will be cleaned and organized, equipped, and field striping laid out.

Update on WOCSD Field Project

Thank you for all the positive comments regarding the conditions of our playing fields. We are less than one year into this five year project but are pleased by the results that are already visible. Below is an update on the WOCSD Field Project:

1. The irrigation system was brought online this spring. After some initial adjustments, the system is working as designed.

2. The surfacing of the track is in the final two stages and will be completed by mid August based on the contractor's schedule.

3. The project continues over the next four years as we work to slowly rehabilitate all of the fields.

4.  The project continues to be on time and on budget.

A thank you to all who have worked with us as we endeavor to provide quality playing surfaces for our students. Thank you to our athletic directors, administrators, coaches, and our fields and grounds, maintenance, and custodial staffs.

Site Walk-Through Information

The following document are the contacts for those who performed a walk-through on June 27, 2014

2014 Wells High Spring Practice and Game Plan

Track – The boys and girls outdoor track and field team will practice each day at the track from 2:15 to 4:30 (pending final approval on usage of temporary track surface). They will use the exterior of the track but will not use the interior grass field. All of the field events will use areas outside of the track to practice.  Because the final work has not been completed on the track, Wells will not host home track meets this spring.

Softball – The varsity and junior varsity softball teams will practice on the varsity softball field. Junior varsity practice will run from 2:15 to 4:00. Varsity softball practice will be from 3:00 to 5:00. All jv and varsity softball teams will play their game on the varsity softball field.

Baseball – The varsity baseball team will practice on the jr. high baseball field from 4-5:45 after the jr. high completes its practice. The junior varsity baseball team will practice on the varsity infield and right field and also use the batting cage located next to the Fitness Center from 2:30 to 4:15. Both teams will play its home games at the jr high baseball field. On those days, the jr. high baseball team will use its field until 3:15 and then move over to the high school baseball diamond and the hitting cage.

Forbes Field Update

November 21, 2013

Dear WOCSD Staff, Students, Parents & Guardians:

Our project to renovate and rehabilitate Forbes Field, and the ongoing maintenance of Warrior Field, has progressed to a point where no further work can be done due to weather and temperature conditions. While Forbes Field (the track & soccer field) look completed, they are not.  The sod has just been laid and has not taken root and the track only has a base layer.

Because of this, no one but authorized personnel will have access to the Forbes Field and Warrior Field areas until the entire facility is opened to general use. All entry gates will be locked and we have requested the Wells Police monitor the field area for unauthorized use.

It is our goal to have an exceptional athletic facility ready for our student athlete’s usage in the fall of 2014. Ensuring this goal is met requires the fields be closed until the all clear is given. If you have questions regarding the facility, please contact our Facilities Director, Dave Smith at 646-8331.

Your assistance is very much requested and very much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Ellen H. Schneider

Superintendent of Schools
