WELLS – Wells High School announced that seniors Jasmine Loukola and Gabriel Kellett have been selected by WHS to receive the Western Maine Conference’s Citizenship Award for 2014.

“Great,” commented Loukola of her selection. “Actually I was very surprised and honored.”  “Sounds very neat,” responded Gabriel Kellett when asked what it was like to be picked.

Jasmine Loukola’s community service includes hours of volunteer work with Relay for Life, Shootin’ for a Cure, and Little Dribblers.   At school she has been a member of the field hockey, lacrosse. Basketball and indoor track teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Equestrian Club and performs with the marching and concert bands and chorus.  She has received the Maine Society of Women Engineers Award, as well as Student of the Trimester Awards and other academic awards.

Gabe Kellett has given many hours of volunteer work to Camp CARD New England, the WHS Greenhouse and school store and he has participated in Special Olympics each year since his freshman year.

“Gabe accepts every challenge presented to him in the classroom and holds an Honors status,” commented teacher Cheryl Oakes.   “His quiet leadership is one of Gabe’s most impressive attributes and he always speaks up for the underdog.”

Loukola and Kellett will be honored for their good citizenship Thursday, April 10th, by the Western Maine Conference at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland.

Each year two students from high schools within the Western Maine Conference (WMC) area are selected by their school principals and athletic directors to receive this honor based on, according to WMC Secretary/treasurer Ken Levinsky, “…contributions to their school in the areas of academics, athletics, leadership and citizenship.”
