This spring, Wells High School junior Nolan Potter was honored as “Student-Athlete of the Month” for March of 2017.  He received this award for his academics, sportsmanship on and off the field and participation on the WHS Wrestling Team.

"It really means a lot to be recognized as Student-Athlete of the Month because I worked so hard over this wrestling season,” said Potter.  “To get recognition is really cool.  It was a really good season this year.”

It certainly was a good season as the WHS Wrestling Team, coached by Scott Lewia, won the Class B South regional and the Maine Class B State wrestling championship.

On a personal level, it was also a very good season for Nolan Potter who became Class B state champion in the 195-pound category, Class B South regional champion in the same category, Mid-State League champion and was named team MVP.   Potter also qualified for and competed at the New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships where he scored two wins and two losses thus ending his season with 50 wins and two losses.

Presenting Potter with a plaque on March 31st was WHS Activities Director Jack Molloy, Pam Moody-Maxon, and John C. Kreie.

“Nolan Potter is most definitely one of my favorite athletes at Wells High School, both on and off the mat,” commented Moody-Maxon.  “He is a genuine person that has always given 100 percent to bettering himself and his teammates.  The best thing about Nolan is that he is a true role model to the younger wrestlers.”

"Nolan was one of the big reasons the wrestling team won a state title this year,” commented Kreie.   “He's part of a large wrestling family.  His grandfather, Bob Walker, I believe, coached the sport in Kennebunk for a number of years."

The Student-Athlete of the Month Program is in its 11th year at Wells High School.  The program is sponsored by WHS, the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency and Moody Maxon Real Estate.  Athletes selected for Student-Athlete of the Month are chosen by the WHS administration.
